While 2017 may be a chaotic year when we look at the world of politics, the world of entertainment is looking to help us escape from that. One of the biggest part of this escape will be gaming, which is seeing a huge growth at the moment, and no sign of slowing down.

With this growth in mind we’ve decided to look at some of the trends that excite us, and what we see as important not only in 2017 but also the near future. Whether it be the latest first-person shooters, or even the more casual online slots, exciting things are happening.

The Rising Tide of Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality had a big effect on 2016, but it looks like 2017 will be the year that it finally takes hold. With the rise of HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, the adoption rate was fairly slow because of the big cost of not only the headsets but the computer to run them. Now we have the PlayStation VR, a most affordable headset that will change that.

With the need for games to support VR, the success of Resident Evil 7 has also shown just how well Virtual Reality can be done. With more games like that, maybe 2017 will see a rise in adoption of this fairly new technology.

Streaming

With next generation consoles and powerful PCs the ability to stream gameplay on services like Twitch has never been easier. Not only that but we also see other forms of sport and entertainment streamed all over the world. Already a strong form of entertainment watch streaming become even more popular in the future.

eSports

An offshoot of kinds from Streaming, eSports take the best players and puts them on the big stage. More importantly, there is a huge amount of money invested in this with advertising and big cash prizes for the winners. Expect eSports to push the future of games into the near future, especially in 2017.

Dominant Downloads

Physical media may still be the choice of some, but the ability to download the latest games on release day is becoming more popular with gamers. With end of year reports from game companies showing a rise in profit from downloads, look for this to be a rising trend that continues in 2017.

There are many other trends that will affect gaming in 2017, and this is what makes the industry so important to watch. One thing you can be sure of though, to stay on the bleeding edge of gaming, you’ll need some very deep pockets.
